New York-based JetBlue Airways said it will make Long Beach, Calif., Airport its West Coast base of operations and is planning service service from there to 14 cities, including Las Vegas, by 2003.
JetBlue is kicking off Long Beach service in August with two nonstop flights a day to and from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.
The company, which operates a fleet of 14 twin-engine Airbus A-320 jets, plans to expand to 27 West Coast departures within two years. No details have been announced on its plans to serve McCarran International Airport.
Six airlines have unsuccessfully attempted to fly routes from Long Beach in the last five years and either have pulled out or failed.
JetBlue already offers two daily flights from New York to Ontario, Calif., which will be unaffected by the Long Beach plans.
