Letter: Assure utilities access for all
Wednesday, May 23, 2001 | 8:40 a.m.
The Nevada Legislature should pass provisions to ensure that low- and moderate-income households have access to affordable power.
Nevadans need affordable utility services. Having air conditioning in Southern Nevada during the extreme heat of summer, and heating in Northern Nevada during the intense cold of winter, is absolutely essential. AARP supports Assembly Bill 349, the bill that creates a state program offering assistance for utility services to eligible households.
AB349 creates a state utilities' assistance program that allows all consumers in need to pay a fixed percentage of their household income that is comparable to that paid by residential users statewide. And that's a fair approach to assuring access to utilities for all.
Nevadans should contact their legislators and tell them that they care about consumer protections and keeping utility rates affordable for everyone. Tell them to pass AB349 for Nevada.
