Editorial: Nevada just might get new neighbors

Wednesday, May 23, 2001 | 8:41 a.m.

The economy of Wendover, Utah, is hurting and so are its residents. The small town's plight stands in stark contrast to West Wendover, its prosperous neighbor across the state line in Nevada that has thrived on gambling. There has been talk for some time now that Congress should redraw the Nevada-Utah border slightly to allow Wendover in Utah to be absorbed by Nevada, hopefully providing the town with an economic boost -- especially if casinos are allowed. The New York Times even took note of the consolidation plans in a front-page story on Tuesday.

Still, some casino executives in West Wendover are skeptical of the plan, saying it could hurt redevelopment in Utah's Wendover if speculators squirrel away undeveloped land in the hope that one day casinos could be built on the property. The casino executives' critics say that the casnios simply are afraid of new competition, which is what is actually motivating their position. Congress and both states should look beyond the views of special interests and take action that will improve the lives of the families and their children who now live in Wendover.
