Three CCSN players sign pro contracts
Tuesday, May 22, 2001 | 10:23 a.m.
Three Community College of Southern Nevada baseball players signed with major league teams two weeks before the amateur draft.
Second baseman John Dibetta signed with the San Diego Padres, catcher Tommy Rojas signed with the New York Yankees and outfielder Jason Habel signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
"It's a big deal," CCSN coach Tim Chambers said. "Every one of them that was drafted, they all upped their stock by playing one more year.
"I think all three of those guys are ready. What's nice is that in their signing bonus, their club will pick up the tab for their schooling if they finish."
The trio, along with pitcher Rejino Gonzalez, catcher John Caruso and pitcher Ryan Meyer, was drafted last year. Each club they were drafted by had until a week before this year's draft to sign them to contracts or the players would be free agents.
Gonzalez and Caruso will re-enter the draft that starts June 5. Meyer sat out this season at CCSN with an injury.
