Letter: Some Democrats backing the rich on tax proposal

Tuesday, May 22, 2001 | 8:35 a.m.

I condemn Sen. John Breaux, D-La., and the coalition for backing the Bush tax cut bill. This is a bill in which President Bush has refused to back down in giving the rich a huge tax cut.

The action by the Breaux coalition is analogous with that of the "me-too" Democrats during the Reagan administration. Because of the "me-too" support, Reagan was able to get a big tax cut for the rich. In addition to giving the rich this big handout, the Reagan legislation brought on the biggest deficit in history. Fortunately, the Clinton administration succeeded in bringing down the deficit and created the present surplus.

The Bush bill, in addition to outrageously and generously benefiting the rich, threatens to bring on the deficit again. The Breaux group is a traitor to the principles of the Democratic Party, which is for the people as opposed to the pro-rich Republicans.

I hope the voters in their respective states vote them out of office. Of course, that also applies to the Republicans supporting Bush. Members of Congress should be mindful that more voters voted for Al Gore and his nonrich tax plan than those for Bush and his pro-rich plan.
