Editorial: This group certainly is deserving of help

Tuesday, May 22, 2001 | 8:34 a.m.

It is encouraging that both houses of the Nevada Legislature are poised to approve Gov. Kenny Guinn's plan that would increase state payments to about 800 foster parents. Foster parents who have a child up to 12 years old placed in their care receive just $12 a day now; under the legislation they would receive $18.22 per day. For those with children 13 and over, the rate would go from $14.40 to $20.57 a day.

Nevada is fortunate that these foster parents gladly have taken on the extraordinary responsibility of caring for children who are not their own. For that, not only have they earned our gratitude and respect, but they also are deserving of adequate compensation to help them defray some of the costs of raising a child.
