Goodman to speak at annual breakfast

The Insurance Women of Las Vegas will hold their annual breakfast honoring their employers and the Insurance Woman of the Year at 7 a.m. Thursday at Marie Calender's Restaurant, 4675 W. Flamingo Road.

The guest speaker will be Mayor Oscar Goodman.

Insurance Women of Las Vegas, a nonprofit organization, invites anyone involved in any aspect of insurance to attend. Guests are welcome. To RSVP or for more information, call 735-7303.

NLV Library forum to help entrepreneurs

The North Las Vegas Library is sponsoring a small-business forum at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive.

Representatives of the Nevada MicroEnterprise Initiative, Women's Business Center, Small Business Administration and the Senior Corps of Retired Executives, along with a lawyer and a banker, will be there to help new entrepreneurs.

Seminars planned for pros, hobbyists

Designers, florists and garden and hobby enthusiasts are invited to attend seminars on the care and handling of Hawaiian-grown tropicals and potted plants.

The seminar for hobbyists will be held 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, and a seminar for professionals will be held 9-11 a.m. Thursday, both at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Learning Center, 2590 Lindell Road.

The Cooperative Extension and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are offering the seminars to the community. Leland Anderson, president of the Big Island Dendrobium Society, and Elton Mow, chairman for the University of Hawaii Orchid Breeding Program and an avid orchid grower, will conduct the seminars.

Disadvantaged kids to participate at UNLV

UNLV will host the National Youth Sports Program for economically disadvantaged children from June 11 to July 14.

Sponsored by the NCAA and operated by the College of Education, the program is open to children ages 10 through 16.

Sports include basketball, soccer and swimming. Other classes will focus on health and career education, math and science, and job responsibilities. Free lunches and transportation will be provided.

Registration and free physicals will take place June 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Nucleus Community Health Centers of Southern Nevada, 916 W. Owens Ave. For more information, contact Porter Troutman at 895-3369.

Pools to open for the season June 11

Clark County pools are preparing to open for the season on June 11 with some surprises.

Three play pools will offer water slides, water sprays, play equipment and zero depth entry, in addition to the traditional pools. Admission will be slightly higher.

Open swim times will be offered at all county pools seven days a week, but classes are also scheduled at individual pools.

While most pools are waiting until June, Sunrise and Sunset pools open 1-5 p.m. on May 26-28 and June 2-3.

Valley Hospital's Center for Behavioral Medicine

is offering free depression and memory loss assessments. The screenings will be done by licensed registered nurses and social workers with psychiatrists on site for evaluations 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Valley Hospital Medical Center, 620 Shadow Lane.
