Friday, May 18, 2001 | 9:44 a.m.
Emily Macy, a senior at Green Valley High School, was named Student Journalist of the Year in a high school journalism awards program co-sponsored by CLASS! Publications and the Las Vegas Sun.
The third annual awards program also honored a high school principal and adviser, as well as student journalists in 16 writing, photography and layout categories.
In nominating Macy for the award, her teacher described her as "intelligent, motivated, responsible and calm under pressure. She was always willing to learn new things, was able to meet deadlines and capable of leading her student newspaper staff."
The teacher said Macy went the extra mile in researching and writing stories. "Her expertise, along with her leadership qualities, earned her the respect of her staff and helped create a positive and productive learning environment."
In other awards presented May 2 at UNLV, Jonathan Zuk of Las Vegas Academy was named CLASS! Student Journalist of the Year for his contributions to the monthly publication. Carol Medcalf of Las Vegas Academy was named Adviser of the Year, and Pam Hawkins, principal of Sunset High School East, was honored as Principal of the Year.
