Athletics may avoid budget cuts

Friday, May 18, 2001 | 10:47 a.m.

It's not a done deal, but it appears the Clark County School District will not have to reduce its $7.6 million athletic budget after all.

At a meeting Wednesday night, the School Board announced $14.3 million in cuts, but excluded athletics from its reductions.

"The only way that athletics would have to be cut would be if the (state) legislature doesn't come through with the money they've already promised (the school district)," district athletic director Larry McKay said. "That's possible, but not likely."

Last week, after being asked to propose a plan to cut 10-12 percent of his budget for the 2001-2002 school year, McKay submitted a set of proposals. One of them recommended that Southern Nevada's Class 4A schools moved into a new Class 5A, thus eliminating travel expenses to and from state championship events outside the Las Vegas area.

McKay said that proposal would remain on the agenda for next month's Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Board of Control meeting, until the State Legislature finalizes its budget.
