Letter: Nevada Power’s greed at root of problems
Thursday, May 17, 2001 | 8:58 a.m.
Regarding your May 11 article on Nevada Power's parent company reporting a loss for the quarter ending March 31: One of the main reasons the company had a loss for the last quarter was poor management.
Sierra Pacific passed out approximately $30 million in the form of stock dividends, a public relations ad blitz and severance pay for two executives. And now they are blaming the market for their losses?
But that's OK, they can always run another rate increase through on the backs of the people of Southern Nevada, with the complete blessings of the Nevada Legislature, the Public Utilities Commission and Gov. Kenny Guinn. Don't our public officials have any backbone to be able to stand up to the utility companies' greed and incompetence? Apparently not.
Those Going Out Of Business signs that are starting to show up in the valley can probably be directly attributed to higher energy costs, but what the heck, maybe it's just a coincidence.
