Indianapolis 500: NLV man’s car gets through inspection
Thursday, May 17, 2001 | 10:34 a.m.
Team owner Eric Zimmerman of North Las Vegas finally wore a big grin Wednesday as his Zali Racing Team's entry in the 85th Indianapolis 500 cleared technical inspection.
Zimmerman's skeleton crew began final preparations to get the year-old G Force/Oldsmobile on the 2 1/2-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway today with anxious '500' veteran driver John Paul Jr.
Zimmerman admitted he is racing on a shoestring budget.
"We have one car, one engine and one driver, but we do have spare tires," he said. Our plan is to practice and get the car in the show Sunday."
Al Unser Jr., already qualified for the inside of the seventh row, ran 25 laps with a fast lap of only 212.575 mph Wednesday.
Davey Hamilton had a top speed of 216.953 in the Sam Schmidt Motorsports Dallara/Oldsmobile.
