Learn about early roots of Las Vegas

The Las Vegas Springs Preserve and the Nevada Archaeological Association will host the Southern Nevada History and Archaeology Festival 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the Desert Demonstration Gardens, 3701 W. Alta Drive.

Archaeological artifacts, historic photos and items from Las Vegas' early days will be on display during the festival, which will feature exhibits by the Las Vegas Springs Preserve and members of the Nevada Archaeological Association.

Public tours of the site early explorers called "las vegas" will be available.

Plenty of ethnic food available

The International Food and Folkline Festival of Southern Nevada will be held 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday at the County Government Center Amphitheater, 500 S.Grand Central Parkway.

Admission is free. A free concert will be held at 7 p.m. Friday by the Wild Celtic Boys and Environmental.

The festival will include storytelling, music and dance, a children's area with hands-on/take home activities as well as handmade crafts and a variety of ethnic food for sale.

More than 20 countries will be represented at the festival by local groups presenting their cultural and ethnic heritage.

Hospitals host seminar on Saturday

St. Rose Dominican Hospital will co-sponsor a pain management seminar with University Medical Center 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Henderson Convention Center.

Physicians, nurses and members of the general public from around Southern Nevada are invited to attend and acquire skills which will help them deal with pain management.

The seminar will focus on specific issues of pain management as they relate to cancer patients and include a discussion on the rights of patients as they pertain to pain management. For more information on the seminar, call 616-4655.

Chamber Symphony to perform concert

The Nevada Chamber Symphony will present "A Salute to the Armed Forces," 3 p.m. Saturday in the theater at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

The musical tribute to the military will feature high school ROTC honor guards and drill teams and the WAF trumpet and horn duo.

Admission is free but tickets are required. For more information or to reserve tickets, call 433-9280. Tickets will also be available one hour prior to the performance in the theater lobby on a first-come, first-served basis. Seating is limited.
