Supreme Court backs suspension

The Nevada Supreme Court Tuesday upheld the decision of Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center of revoking the privileges of a doctor for one year.

The court said the hospital conducted a reasonable investigation to obtain the facts surrounding the treatment in 1995 of Adolph Anguiano by Dr. Susan Meyer.

Anguiano, 34, a homeless man, was found lying unconscious in the wet grass of a Las Vegas hotel. He was taken to Sunrise and admitted to the emergency room, where he was examined by Meyer.

The hospital investigated and found Meyer treated Anguiano for seven minutes. It concluded the treatment was substandard. Three peer review committees reviewed the circumstances of the case and recommended that Meyer be suspended.

She filed suit, claiming there was a breach of contract. District Judge Donald Mosley dismissed the suit and the case was appealed to the Supreme Court.

Driver, 71, killed in crash

A 71-year-old North Las Vegas man was killed Tuesday morning when, police say, he failed to yield the right of way, causing his car to collide with another car.

The accident occurred about 8 a.m. at the intersection of Owens Avenue and Main Street.

Servil Estrada was driving a Toyota Corolla west on Owens in the left turn lane, while a Nissan Maxima, driven by Paul Lawson, 18, was headed east on Owens, police said. The Corolla began making a left turn on a green signal onto Main, but failed to yield for the oncoming Maxima, police said.

Both Lawson and Estrada were taken to University Medical Center, where the elderly man was pronounced dead, and Lawson remains in moderate condition.

Estrada's death is the 37th accident fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year, compared with 31 at this time last year.

Police say victim is 13

A man wanted in Henderson on sex-related charges was arrested Tuesday by the Criminal Apprehension Team in Las Vegas.

Roscoe Johnson, 26, was arrested on two counts of sexual assault of a victim under 14.

Officials said Johnson befriending the 13-year-old victim while he was working as a security guard in an apartment complex in Henderson and lured the victim into committing sexual acts.

Johnson is accused of fleeing before Henderson Police could contact him. The Criminal Apprehension Team is composed of detectives from Metro, North Las Vegas and Henderson police and special agents from the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service.
