Letter: Hanging laundry outside saves a lot of energy

Wednesday, May 16, 2001 | 8:59 a.m.

We moved to Las Vegas four years ago, and I have never seen a better climate for hanging laundry outside and saving tons of energy. Yet the various homeowner associations prevent people from hanging laundry outside. They don't even want you to hang rugs out to dry. It's purely a matter of aesthetics for them.

Do we have an energy crisis or not? Or are the rate hikes by Nevada Power and all the scare talk just ways to justify cost increases?

If we do have an energy crisis, why aren't the governor and the power companies requesting the homeowner associations relax their rules about not hanging laundry outside? Without this mandate it appears as if they would rather you burn electricity and gas for the same job the readily available sun and wind will do for free.

Can't the governor issue a mandate for all residents to utilize "solar power" for their laundry until there is no longer an energy crisis? Think of the megawatts we could conserve if we were allowed to dry items outdoors.

Of course, this could all be moot if there is a blackout. Then it's wash your clothes by hand and hang them out whether the homeowners associations like it or not.
