Letter: Dentist exams are not fair

Tuesday, May 15, 2001 | 9:39 a.m.

As a dentist licensed in two other states, I highly resent the implication in a recent Sun editorial that dentists from other states are incompetent, and that by them taking the Nevada Dental Board they will be eliminated.

Most dentists from out of state have taken one or more clinical examinations. Some of those states have accredited dental schools, unlike Nevada.

The dentists who would be taking your board are most certainly from some of the schools that the examiners attended, and might be a classmate.

A clinical demonstration is not a test for competency, but rather a test of manual dexterity. It is more than obvious that the board exists solely for controlling the influx of dentists into this state (Clark County) so as to reduce the competition.

It is a sad commentary in this nation when a dentist is restricted from practicing his/her profession wherever he chooses by obsolete and archaic examinations.
