Vegas gypsum plant to be sold

Monday, May 14, 2001 | 10:55 a.m.

James Hardie Industries Ltd., an Australian company, said it retained J.P. Morgan to advise it on plans to sell its U.S. gypsum and wallboard operations -- including one in the Las Vegas area.

James Hardie officials declined comment on the status of the Las Vegas mine and plant. But in 1999, James Hardie officials said the operations in the Blue Diamond area employed 150 people and made 700 million square feet of wallboard per year.

In 2000, Hardie said it bought the Western Gypsum mine near St. George, Utah, to supply the Las Vegas plant.

Competitors Georgia-Pacific and PABCO also have local gypsum operations.

Hardie also has U.S. operations in California, Arkansas and Washington state.
