Single parent: Straight-A student deserves to go to camp

Monday, May 14, 2001 | 10:54 a.m.

A single parent's budget does not stretch enough to send her 12-year-old daughter to camp, one mother says.

Her daughter is a straight-A student, but as a single mom, summer camp is beyond her budget.

"I have and will always work to give my children everything they need," the mother says.

Her daughter deserves to go to camp, she says, and she is looking for some way to get her there even if the money isn't in her pockets.

Sometimes simple things, such as toasting marshmallows and singing around a campfire with other children, or being around camp counselors who are positive role models, are the memories a child carries with her through the rest of her life.
