Letter: Everyone could cut back on driving time

Monday, May 14, 2001 | 9:19 a.m.

I am retired -- as is my wife. We live in south Las Vegas. We enjoy going downtown. It is about a 26-mile round trip. We have one car.

We used to get by with a gasoline bill of $10 a week. That is now $15 a week and climbing. What can we do?

Vice President Dick Cheney is against price controls. He and the president think gas prices will find their own level. I'm not going into where the president and vice president have or had their money invested. George Bush Sr. headed Zapata Petroleum in Kuwait. Could we call Bush and Cheney oil barons?

Here is what we are doing. At least two days a week we don't drive at all. Granted, we don't work, so we can do without driving on these two days. If all, or most, retired people cut out driving two days a week it couldn't hurt.

Working people -- where possible -- could also cut back on their driving. Car pooling, riding bikes, etc.

The administration won't tackle the high price of gasoline. Let's do it for them.
