Thursday, May 10, 2001 | 10:55 a.m.

Jimmy Vasser of Las Vegas was the seventh fastest driver for the second consecutive day Wednesday on the fourth day of practice for the 85th running of the Indianapolis 500.

"As a team we're making some gains," Vasser said, "Tony (Stewart, Vasser's teammate) and I were doing different things. We were certainly getting some directions as you could see from Tony's speed. I think we're getting there. Hopefully we'll do even better tomorrow."

Vasser's fastest lap was 222.907 miles an hour. Las Vegan Davey Hamilton, driving for Sam Schmidt Motorsports, had the 24th fastest time in his backup car at 219.658.

Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr. of Galles Racing was 33rd quickest at 214.351.
