March visitor volume up; deal approved with Yahoo.com

Thursday, May 10, 2001 | 10:34 a.m.

Las Vegas visitor volume increased by 5.5 percent to 3.3 million people in March, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said Wednesday.

The agency responsible for marketing the city said convention attendance climbed 33.6 percent to 500,815, with the increase attributed to four new conventions that weren't in Las Vegas a year ago.

Citywide room occupancy averaged 94.6 percent, up from 93 percent a year ago. Nationally, occupancy rates are around 64 percent, the LVCVA said. The number of hotel rooms in the county -- 124,404 -- was up by nearly 4,000 rooms over March 2000.

Clark County gaming revenue was up 3.2 percent to $699 million for the month.

For the first quarter of 2001, visitor volume hit 8.9 million, a 0.8 percent increase over the same period a year ago.

In another matter, the LVCVA board of directors approved a budget transfer to pay $610,000 for a partnership with Yahoo.com to advertise its "Highroller Fantasy" contest on the Internet. The contest, which will award eight winners with three-day VIP accommodations for two, is part of a Las Vegas summer marketing package.

Television ads for the contest were controversial for two networks. CBS rejected the ads and ABC requested a script change because of references to gambling.
