Letter: MASH shelter needs new management
Thursday, May 10, 2001 | 8:30 a.m.
Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman is right in sending the Rev. Joe Carroll and his MASH team back to California.
In the past five years that they have been running the Las Vegas shelter, why haven't the funds been raised?
What major events have they sponsored to raise the funds needed to get the shelter out of the hands of the city?
I'm in agreement with the mayor and City Council on this one. Why should city dollars continue to be poured into a project that should be up and running on its own by now?
It is a poor excuse to point the finger at someone else when you haven't lived up to your side of the bargain.
Yes, I do feel sorry for the people who may have to move, but in my opinion the place needs to be run by someone who actually lives in Las Vegas, not some priest from San Diego who skips into town every now and then.
If you really want to help the homeless at the village, Mr. Mayor, I would say get rid of the present management team and hire someone else for five more years! Maybe they can pull in the matching funds because all Father Joe has proven is that he can get the "cars, boats and RV's," but he can't raise the private dollars from the citizens in this town.
