Driver killed as sports car rear-ended by truck on U.S. 95

Thursday, May 10, 2001 | 10:20 a.m.

One person was killed as a car exploded in a four car-accident on U.S. 95 Wednesday.

The accident happened at 4:50 p.m. in the northbound lanes of U.S. 95 at Eastern Avenue.

The Nevada Highway Patrol said a pickup truck struck the back of a small sports car that had stopped in the fast lane after being involved in a minor accident with another pickup.

"The driver of the car was trying to get it started when he was hit from behind," Trooper Alan Davidson said. "The impact pushed the 280Z under the pickup in front of it and caused the pickup to flip over."

The collision caused the sports car to burst into flames, Davidson said.

A fourth vehicle traveling in the fast lane of the freeway rear-ended the pickup that struck the sports car, Davidson said.

The driver of the sports car died at the scene. No one else involved in the accident suffered more than minor injuries, Davidson said.

The accident shut down all traffic on northbound U.S. 95 at Eastern for more than two hours, snarling rush hour traffic.
