Fifth annual event scheduled
The Summerlin Children's Forum fifth annual Evening of Excellence Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Regent Las Vegas, 221 North Rampart Blvd.
The evening's events will include a special guest appearance by schools Superintendent Carlos Garcia. The money raised from this event goes to scholarships to high school seniors.
The Evening of Excellence serves as the highlight of the Summerlin Children's Forum's formal recognition program that acknowledges and rewards outstanding student leaders in the community. As part of the program, a student, educator and parent from each of the 17 schools will be recognized for their community accomplishments.

Summerlin festival on tap Saturday
Professional and amateur artists of all ages are invited to participate in Summerlin's first annual "La Strada dell' Arte" street painting festival to benefit art programs in Summerlin schools 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of the Summerlin Library, 1771 Inner Circle Drive.
The street surrounding the library will be divided into a limited number of squares, to be decorated with dozens of chalk pastel paintings. A colorful tradition originating in 16th century Italy, street painting festivals are enjoying a renaissance in American cities.
This free public festival will also feature nonstop entertainment and Italian themed food.

Augustine will be guest speaker
State Controller Kathy Augustine is to be Nevada Women History Project's guest speaker 10 a.m.-noon Saturday at Desert Pines Country Club, 3414 E. Bonanza Road.
Augustine's topic, "Women in Government," is to offer a comprehensive look at the progress women have made over the years in regard to political aspiration.
Augustine, the first woman elected as controller and a former state senator representing Clark County's District 7, has considerable political experience herself.

A community Japanese Floral Art
class is being offered 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. To confirm attendance, call Edwina Hammond at 655-2447.
