Students help to outfit welfare recipients as they look for jobs

Wednesday, May 9, 2001 | 8:53 a.m.

The PAL (Partnership at Las Vegas) Program at Las Vegas High School is collecting gently used professional clothing for the Nevada Welfare Division's New Employees of Nevada.

A group of 130 students, using a Service Learning grant, created Project First Impression. The program encourages employees to donate used shirts, slacks, ties, skirts, dresses, blouses and shoes to be given to people in the welfare work program.

The tax-deductible items will be sized, sorted, cleaned and combined to make "interview outfits" for welfare recipients seeking employment and self-sufficiency.

PAL students will pick up the donated clothing through May 29.

Service Learning is a method of teaching and learning in which students improve academically and develop personal skills through structured service projects that meet community needs.

The PAL program at Las Vegas High is a unique School-to-Work curriculum designed to bridge the gap between education and work.
