Harrah’s to help build senior housing project

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- Harrah's Entertainment Inc. has agreed to finance construction of a recreation center at a proposed senior citizen assisted-living project, Assembly Majority Leader Barbara Buckley said Tuesday.

Buckley is pushing a bill for $6 million to build the project on land to be secured through the Southern Nevada Public Lands Act.

If the bill is approved and the project goes forward, Buckley said Harrah's Entertainment is committed to not only donating the money for the recreation center, but to providing volunteers to help with activities.

"The generous offer from Harrah's makes this project even more attractive as we try to find solutions to the high cost of housing and services for Nevada's aging population," Buckley said.

Assembly Bill 340 is being heard today by the Assembly Ways and Means Committee. Buckley said Julie Murray, director of community relations for Harrah's, was to present the offer to the committee.

The offer from Harrah's, Buckley said, "is a perfect example of a corporation joining with government in a public-private partnership to improve the lives of Nevada citizens."
