Editorial: Gridlock highlights mass transit’s worth

The Texas Transportation Institute released its annual gridlock survey of the nation's major cities. The fact that motorists battle congestion-related traffic delays won't come as a surprise to Southern Nevadans who commute to work every day.
The study does remind us, however, of the need for government to continue its advocacy of mass transportation. The Regional Transportation Commission, for its part, has made important strides in establishing an efficient bus system and promoting ride-sharing by commuters.
Cuts in the RTC's budget have been eyed by state legislators as a way to make up for part of state government's revenue shortfall. But now is not the time to reduce funding for these worthy endeavors, especially for programs that increase the use of mass transit, which not only reduce gridlock but also help reduce pollution.
