LV-Cleveland flight announced, existing Vegas service beefed up by America West

Tuesday, May 8, 2001 | 11:33 a.m.

America West Airlines on Tuesday announced plans to launch direct air service between Las Vegas and Cleveland on Aug. 31. The company is also adding service on existing routes to New York/JFK, San Francisco, Houston and Dallas.

America West will have one daily flight departing for Cleveland at 11:30 p.m., and a flight arriving in Las Vegas at 9:22 p.m. Cleveland will become America West's 39th destination from Las Vegas.

It will be the third carrier to serve Cleveland from Las Vegas non-stop; currently, Continental Airlines offers three daily non-stop flights, and Southwest Airlines offers a non-stop flight on Saturdays.

America West will begin a sixth daily roundtrip flight between Las Vegas and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport on July 1. This gives America West eight daily nonstops from Las Vegas to the New York area -- JFK or Newark, N.J.

America West will also add two new flights between Las Vegas and San Francisco, creating six daily roundtrip flights as of Aug. 20.

Finally, America West said it's retiming from night to day its flights from Las Vegas to Houston and Dallas; and is increasing the frequency on both routes from three to seven weekly round-trips.

Phoenix-based America West is McCarran International Airport's second-largest carrier, handling 6 million passengers at the airport in 2000.
