Tuesday, May 8, 2001 | 9:36 a.m.

Green Valley senior Garrett Guzman, a fixture on the prep baseball scene since leading the Gators to their sixth straight state title as a freshman, has been rewarded with the area's ultimate honor.

Guzman, an outfielder, was the coaches' selection for Southern Nevada's Player of the Year. He finished his four-year varsity career with a .530 batting average, hitting .489 with and eight homers and 41 RBIs for the Southeast Division champion Gators this spring.

Joining Guzman on the All-Southern Nevada first team were Basic's Matt Elliott, Jesse Craig and Micah Schnurstein; Bishop Gorman's Derek Rodriguez and J.C. Sibley; Durango's Coltyn Simmons and Brandon Campo; Bonanza's Austin Hales; Cimarron-Memorial's Robert Grana; Palo Verde's Larry Ellenbrook; Silverado's Mike Welter; and Green Valley's Ryan Tabor, Zeke Parraz and Chris McGovern.

The Gators' Nick Garritano was named Sunrise Coach of the Year, with Sunset coaching honors going to Centennial's Charlie Cerrone. Guzman, Las Vegas' Sean Kazmar, Hales and Ellenbrook were chosen MVPs for their respective divisions.
