Body found near Apex

Metro Police homicide detectives were called to the Apex exit of Interstate 15 Sunday morning after a dead body was found.

The body was found about 10:30 a.m. near the exit north of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, police said.

The victim appears to have died from knife wounds. His identity was not known this morning, police said.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call detectives at 229-3521 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Driver sought in boy's injuries

Metro Police are searching for a sports car in connection with a Thursday night hit-and-and run accident that resulted in injuries to a 4-year-old boy.

The car is described as an '80s model Datsun 280ZX, police said.

The accident happened about 8 p.m., when the boy ran from the north side of Lake Mead Boulevard to the south side near Jones Boulevard. The driver of the car tried to avoid the boy by braking and swerving to the right, but struck the boy, police said.

The driver stopped, but then drove from the scene west on Lake Mead, police said. The boy was taken to University Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition this morning.

Man killed teaching grandson to drive

A North Las Vegas man died at University Medical Center Friday from injuries he received while trying to teach his 15-year-old grandson how to drive hours earlier.

Eddie Macklin, 59, died about 2 p.m. Friday after suffering injuries to his pelvis, legs and head.

He was giving the boy a driving lesson about 11 a.m. at a home in the 2200 block of East Brooks Avenue, near Cheyenne Avenue and Civic Center Drive.

Macklin was dragged under the car after the grandson inadvertently hit the gas while the car was in reverse. Macklin was standing between the driver's side door and the car, police said.

Macklin was dragged about 35 feet, police said.

Man discovered in apartment

Two men working to refurbish an apartment building near UNLV Saturday morning found a dead body in their apartment.

Metro Police say that the two workers discovered the dead man about 6:15 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 5000 block of Tamarus Street, near Maryland Parkway and Tropicana Avenue.

The two workers said they left the apartment Friday night and returned to find the body. Police say the victim suffered stab wounds.

The workers left the door unlocked when they left Friday night, Lt. Wayne Petersen said.

Blood drive scheduled

United Blood Services has scheduled a blood drive for injured Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Bobby Kintzel, Tuesday at the Clark County Detention Center.

The drive will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Suite A, 330 S. Casino Center Blvd.

Kintzel was struck by a fleeing suspect's car on April 21 on U.S. 95 near Flamingo Road, after the trooper set down spikes in the roadway in an attempt to stop the car.

University fills development post

UNLV has filled its associate vice president for development post with a staffer who has experience at both Arizona State University and the University of Kansas.

Fred Conboy most recently served as senior development officer at Arizona State and spent 16 years with the University of Kansas Endowment Association.

The new position was established to help meet the demands of the university's growth and is designed as a supervisory position over the development officers who work with the university's deans, a UNLV spokesman said.

UNLV has about 22,000 students and more than 700 faculty members, and offers a total of 180 undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees.
