Talk about a stacked deck.
On Wednesday President Bush announced that he was creating a commission to consider ways to reform Social Security, but all 16 members acknowledge they share Bush's view that the system should allow workers to invest at least part of their payroll taxes on their own. Not all financial experts agree that privatizing Social Security would be a sound decision, which makes the commission's composition troubling to say the least.
If Bush genuinely wanted to find out what would work best, he would have invited a wide range of individuals with varying opinions. Only through a robust debate can people determine the best path to take to preserve such an essential government program. For that matter, any recommendations that came out of a balanced panel would carry a lot more weight with the public than would a sham commission like this.
