Letter: Protect county’s share of funds from DMV taxes

Thursday, May 3, 2001 | 8:46 a.m.

I understand that the Nevada Legislature is considering Assembly Bill 457, which would take approximately $65 million of Department of Motor Vehicles tax dollars away from Southern Nevada to give teachers a pay raise. These pay raises would go to teachers who don't even work in Southern Nevada.

I believe that teachers deserve a pay raise, but not at the expense of the citizens of Clark County. Clark County services will surely suffer if this bill passes.

Clark County has already instituted a hiring freeze. Now there are talks of layoffs if this bill were to pass. The DMV tax dollars that will be diverted to the state would take away from the Clark County courts, parks, social programs and our roads and highways.

Clark County's representatives in the Nevada Legislature need to stand up for the residents of Clark County and oppose AB457.
