Wednesday, May 2, 2001 | 8:24 a.m.
The Languedoc, a large region in the southwest of France, is famous for geese, foie gras, a distillate called Armagnac and the world's best prunes, but lately, it has emerged as one of the best regions in Europe for budget-priced wines. B & G, aka Barton & Guestier, is one of the biggest negociants in the world, which means that they buy huge volumes of wine and pass the savings on to their customers. Call this wine Cab 101, a spicy, lightly flavored wine with notes of raspberry and red currant. It has a nice finish and it goes well with poultry and roast chicken.
Available at Smith's, $5.99, or $4.99 with a Fresh Values Card.
