Did a little too much celebrating? Instead of turning on ignition, turn on to Designated Drivers

Friday, March 30, 2001 | 5:03 a.m.

A company that ensures that both drinkers and their cars get home safely made it difficult to come up with a believable excuse for driving under the influence.

Now a volunteer group working with the company has made it harder still.

For three years Designated Drivers has been providing rides home and drivers for those who have had too much to drink -- for $40 cash a trip.

A new group, Friends of Designated Drivers, has started working with Designated Drivers to send out members to bring home party-goers who can't afford the fee. Callers must have their own vehicles.

"We aren't necessarily a taxi service," Designated Driver Vice President Lance Krig said. "Callers are not allowed to be in our vehicles. We drive the person and their car home."

The partier's car is followed by a second Designated Driver, who gives the driver a ride back.

The nonprofit Friends of Designated Drivers started providing the service free on Feb. 8, but it's not in competition with the company.

"When somebody calls Designated Drivers and can't afford the service, we'll direct them to Debbie (Walker) at no charge," Krig said.

The volunteers use some discretion.

"Callers first go through Designated Drivers, and most times people can pay the charge," Walker, executive director of Friends of Designated Drivers, said. "But, if someone sincerely can't, then they are asked to sign a piece of paper saying that they cannot afford any other means of transportation."

"We owe this service to the community," Krig said, "but at the same time we have to cover our costs. We can't be put out of business. That wouldn't do anyone any good. We don't want our services abused."

Designated Drivers and the new volunteer group provide rides to the unimpaired as well. Senior citizens who need assistance with hospital visits or grocery store runs find Designated Drivers a convenient service. Those who cannot afford the fee are referred to the volunteers.

"One time, we drove someone out all the way to California," Krig said. "We have fun with what we do because we believe it's a great thing."

The company offers a monthly retainer at discounted prices to businesses and individuals through.

"A local bar has signed up with our services because they really care about how their customers get home," Krig said.

Other bars, such as the Rum Runner Desert Inn, operate their own complimentary ride services for patrons living within a 3-mile radius.

Designated Drivers generally cover the entire Las Vegas Valley. The first 15 miles costs $40. Anything exceeding 15 miles costs $5, which means the maximum amount is $45 for a ride anywhere in the valley.

Friends of Designated Drivers needs volunteers and donations to ensure it can continue to offer its free services. For more information, call 531-6959
