A new license plate celebrating the city's 100th birthday in 2005 was unveiled Thursday by a group of volunteers who hope the plate will soon be offered to drivers.
The group, Volunteers for a Centennial Celebration, came up with the idea of a special license place after attending a leadership class offered through the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.
The orange-tinted plate has a picture of the famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign on Las Vegas Boulevard.
During his weekly press conference, Mayor Oscar Goodman jokingly offered his own version of the license plate, which included a caricature of himself.
Sen. Bob Coffin, D-Las Vegas, along with other legislators, will introduce a bill to the Senate Committee on Transportation April 3.
Money generated from the sale of the plates would go toward the city's centennial celebration. A committee will ultimately be formed, and the funds collected from the plate will pay for historic markers, historic walking tours and other means of acknowledging the city's 1905 founding.
"Las Vegas has a rich, multi-faceted history that deserves to come front and center and be commemorated not just in the handful of years ahead, but for generations to come," said Gillian Silver, a volunteer.
