UNLV Olympic sports notes: Lady Rebels tennis falls to No. 1 team

Stanford, the nation's top-ranked women's tennis team, lost only one set Wednesday en route to a 7-0 defeat of UNLV at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Lady Rebels fell to 4-8 while the Cardinal, which boasts six ranked players, remained undefeated at 16-0.

The only UNLV player to win a set was Marianne Bakken at the third position, who ultimately fell to 11th-ranked Gabriela Lastra, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.

Stanford remains in town to face No. 36 BYU today while UNLV will take on Utah Friday and BYU Sunday.

UNLV used seven pitchers in the nonconference game.

Ben Scheinbaum (1-0) pitched the fifth inning and earned the win.

Joe Maruffi pitched the ninth inning and picked up his second save of the season.

UNLV resumes Mountain West Conference play tonight at home with the first of a three-game series against BYU.

The Rebels resume Mountain West Conference play Saturday at Rebel Diamond with a doubleheader against San Diego State beginning at noon.

UNLV improved to 9-6 overall and finished 5-1 at home this spring.

The Rebels close out the season with matches against Utah, BYU and San Diego State (all in San Diego) this weekend and New Mexico and Air Force (in Colorado Springs) next weekend.

The Mountain West Conference Championships will be held April 19-21 in Salt Lake City.
