New band of beltway now open

Thursday, March 29, 2001 | 10:58 a.m.

Another section of the Las Vegas Beltway opened Wednesday that extends it to Summerlin.

About 1 p.m. the newest section of the beltway opened, six days after a portion stretching from Sahara Avenue to Charleston Boulevard opened to traffic, Bobby Shelton, Clark County Public Works spokesman, said.

Motorists can now start from Henderson, the southern point of the beltway, also known as Interstate 215, and drive around the southwest edge of the Las Vegas Valley to the northwest side.

Drivers will encounter five traffic lights along the way and speed limits ranging from 65 miles per hour to 35 along the stretch from Decatur Boulevard to Fort Apache Road.

Shelton said the public works staff hopes the next section to Cheyenne Avenue, which is under construction, will by complete by the end of August.
