Minority Purchasing Council sets event
The Nevada Minority Purchasing Council's sixth annual Excellence Awards and Concert will begin with a silent auction at 6 p.m. Friday at Caesars Palace.
The black-tie event will also feature a reception, dinner, awards and a special concert performance by jazz artist Harvey Mason, with special guest stars Kenny Rankin and Gerald Albright. For more information, call 894-4477.
Membership social scheduled Sunday
The Green Valley/Henderson Chapter of City of Hope will hold a membership ice cream social 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway.
There will be a brief presentation explaining City of Hope and its focus on patient care and research. Anyone else who is interested in becoming a member of City of Hope is also welcome.

Auxiliary to honor founding members
The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary will honor its founding members at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Army's administrative center, 1900 Palomino Lane.
Charter members who will be honored will be: Ruby Mann, Alice Pearson, Ruth Vogliotti and Audrey Wickman as they reminisce about the founding of the Women's Auxiliary in 1965.
The auxiliary will also hold a "pitter patter" baby shower to benefit the Salvation Army's Family Services. Members and friends are asked to bring bottles, baby food, diapers, clothes, and other items for both boys and girls. For further details, call 870-4430, Ext. 10.
Health festival on tap Saturday
Free and low-cost health insurance is available through Medicaid and the Nevada Check Up program.
In an effort to inform families about these programs, the Covering Kids organization is sponsoring a health festival 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Lewis E. Rowe Elementary School, 4338 S. Bruce St., behind Desert Springs Hospital.

Speedway to host Best Coalition race
The Best Coalition race for Safe and Drug Free Kids will be held 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Proceeds will cover event costs and increase current prevention projects in Clark County. This includes providing resource materials for schools and community agencies, as well as parent and youth initiatives such as Talk Now Nevada and the Lunch and Learn parenting program.
