The Nevada State Contractors Board has revoked the licenses of eight Las Vegas contractors and taken disciplinary action against four other companies that were accused of violating Nevada construction laws.
The board revoked the licenses of five contractors associated with Walter Welty including Aqua Blue Pools, Welty Construction, Logos Plumbing, Logos Pools and KEW Excavation, alleging they failed to comply with the terms of a construction contract and regulations concerning contract provisions for the building of residential pools and spas.
The board said the companies also failed to provide lien information to a homeowner, failed to include their license number and monetary limit on a bid or contract, abandoned a construction project, failed to pay for materials and services and didn't comply with the board's notice to correct.
Welty could not be reached for comment.
Other companies that had their licenses revoked include:
* Southwest Resources, which was accused of violating Nevada laws when it allegedly submitted false reference certificates, failed to comply with a court order and to establish financial responsibility. The company allegedly failed to keep in force a bond or cash deposit and notify the board of a change of address.
The defendant could not be reached for comment.
* Weathers Construction of North Las Vegas, which was accused of substandard workmanship, "willful departure from plans or specifications" and failing to comply with a notice to correct and keeping in force a bond.
The defendant could not be reached for comment.
* Bishop Paving, which was charged with substandard workmanship, failing to comply with a notice to correct, failing to include its license number and monetary limit on a contract and "acting in the capacity of a contractor under a name other than the name set forth on the license."'
The defendant could not be reached for comment.
Four other companies were disciplined by the board:
* Landgraphics Inc. was issued a one-year letter of reprimand after the board found the company allegedly failed to pay for materials and services.
The firm could not be reached for comment.
* A.E.E. Cement Contractor, which was accused of substandard workmanship, was also issued a one-year letter of reprimand and assessed legal costs of $1,000.
The defendant could not be reached for comment.
* Blue Bird Pools Inc. was fined $2,100 and legal costs after it was charged with substandard workmanship, failing to comply with a notice to correct and laws concerning contract provisions for the building of pools and spas.
The contractor was also accused of failing to include its license number and monetary limit on a contract and to provide information to a homeowner concerning liens, describe materials to be used and equipment to be installed and the agreed payment for the work and estimated date of completion.
The firm could not be reached for comment.
The board suspended the licenses of two contractors, Kolob Heating and Cooling and Kolob Plumbing, alleging they failed to pay for materials and services and failed to establish financial responsibility.
But Brand Thornton, the owner of Kolob Heating and co-owner of Kolob Plumbing, disputed the allegations.
"One of Kolob Heating's employees contracted some work at the Resort at Summerlin on the side without my knowledge," Thornton said. "He got a Las Vegas subcontractor ... a contract with ... a general contractor for the hotel-casino's Brasserie restaurant, to install piping and hot taps there."
He said Kolob received a bill for unpaid work on that project, even though it wasn't a contractor there.
Thornton said the license suspension will be lifted in a matter of days after he provides a financial statement to the board and enters into a settlement with the resort subcontractor.
