Privacy ID introduced in Vegas

Wednesday, March 28, 2001 | 11:03 a.m.

Sprint Privacy ID, a service that enables customers to screen phone calls before answering them, is now available to Las Vegas residents.

A Sprint spokeswoman said Tuesday that Privacy ID intercepts unidentified or blocked calls before the phone rings. An announcement instructs callers to identify themselves or the call will not be connected. The phone rings and a recording of the caller's identification is played for the customer.

Sprint officials said the screening system allows customers to control incoming calls, know who's calling before the phone rings, screen telemarketers, nuisance or prank calls and prevent people from having to talk to callers they don't want to hear from.

The service is available for $4.95 a month. Caller ID, which is required to take the service, costs $9 a month, but can be purchased as part of a telephone package.
