Judge denies new trial for Williams

Wednesday, March 28, 2001 | 10:56 a.m.

District Judge Mark Gibbons ruled Tuesday that Jessica Williams should not be granted a new trial.

Williams is scheduled to be sentenced Friday on six counts of driving under the influence of a prohibited substance in connection with the March 19, 2000, deaths of six teenagers on Interstate 15.

Williams' attorney, John Watkins, asked for a new trial alleging that the state destroyed key evidence because prosecutors failed to ensure that Williams' blood was refrigerated after it was tested by their experts.

Watkins also says that jurors can't legally find Williams guilty of DUI, but acquit her at the same time of being impaired.
