Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

Beautiful weather and a course in tip-top shape greeted a large field of golfers at Las Vegas Country Club last week for the club's annual Men's Member/Guest event.

The format for this popular outing was as follows: On holes one through six it was best ball of twosome with full handicap; holes seven through 12 were Chapman/Scotch with 10 percent of combined handicaps (both players tee off, then hit each other's second shot before deciding which ball they prefer to play); and holes 13-18 were scramble with 10 percent of combined handicap.

Best-ball victors in the Spartans Flight were Lance Wallin and guest Barry Barkin with a score of 17. The Andy Blumen/Larry Close duo and the Bill Fain/Jeremy Anderson pairings placed second at 19.

Charlie Pape and Jess Haldman won the Chapman/Scotch segment with 21.6, edging the Fain/Anderson duo (21.8).

In the scramble, Don Pitchford and Mike Kling shared honors with Frank Larsen and Rob Mullaney. Both teams scored 18.

Winners of the best-ball segment in the Blue Devils Flight were Allen Vogel and Tony Marlon, whose 17 points easily defeated the teams of Gary Ashworth/ Keith Lopeman, Dan Shapiro/Julian Dugas and Paul Schofield/Rick Chulick, who came in with 20 apiece.

Ashworth and Lopeman's 21.9 prevailed in the Chapman/Scotch, with Chuck Weigman/D. Krametbauer placing second with 23.

The Weigman/Krametbauer duo won the Scramble portion of play with 17, beating Vogel/Marlon (18.7).

Steve Yamaguchi and A. Knight won the best ball in the Wildcats Flight with 19. Joel Fischman and Larry Lee placed second with 20.

In the Chapman/Scotch, Jeff Harmon and John Toman prevailed with a 23, edging Yamaguchi/Knight (23.3).

Dale Roesner and Jeff Zimmerman won the scramble with 19.4 followed by the team of Doug Sanderson and Mark Morton.

Bob Faiss and Justin Cooper's 19 won best ball in the Owls Flight; Tom Kummer and Chuck Halsley prevailed in the Chapman/Scotch with 21.8, and in the scramble the Syd Lilly/Ron Plotkin pairing was victorious with 20.4.

In the Hoyas Flight, best ball victors with a score of 19 were Don Cambeiro and Fred Smith, followed by the Al Castaldo/Pete Madonia duo.

Castaldo and Madonia came back and won the Chapman/Scotch with 24 points, edging Mike Small and Paul Soth's 24.2.

The Camberio/Smith team's 18.5 won the scramble over Bob Cordaro and Dave Roitburd, who came in with 19.5.

The fifth biennial international team match-play competition (the second to be held outside the U.S.), will be played Nov. 7-10, 2002, on the Player-designed Links Course at the Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate in George, South Africa.

The Presidents Cup features many of the world's best golfers, with 12 representing the United States and the same number making up the International Team of players from around the world, excluding Europe. The U.S. has won three of the four Presidents Cups played.

The 2000 Presidents Cup generated $2.8 million that was distributed to charities around the world. A total of $7.5 million has now been given to charities from the four Presidents Cups.
