Metro trims positions out of leaner budget

Tuesday, March 27, 2001 | 10:46 a.m.

Metro Police, preparing for a leaner financial year, pared 56 positions -- including 25 officers -- from its proposed budget.

The revised budget proposal was given to Metro's Fiscal Affairs Committee at its meeting Monday. The new budget cuts about $1.9 million from the original budget, trimming it to $294.9 million, Lois Willis, the department's comptroller, said.

If the state's financial outlook improves, Metro cuts could be returned to the original budget, which called for 75 new officer positions and 80 new civilian positions. The new budget proposal calls for 50 new officer and 49 new civilian jobs.

The Las Vegas City Council and Clark County Commission approve the budget and fund the department. The city and county pay for the department based on percentage of service used by each.
