Letter: Column omitted key to gun safety

Tuesday, March 27, 2001 | 10:01 a.m.

I enjoyed the column about his misadventures with firearms. I agree completely that a person who is not comfortable around firearms shouldn't be anywhere near one. Very bad things can and do happen to people, both young and old, who shouldn't be handling firearms.

Quite a few individuals are handling or legally carrying, with or without a concealed weapons permit, firearms that they are not proficient with. But Katsilometes left out one important fact: Education!

Obviously, his "friend" Paul Clampett didn't bother to attend a basic firearms class, or he wouldn't have pulled such a bonehead move. These are the type of people that give all firearms enthusiasts bad names. Katsilometes' brother and himself, at the time, probably didn't have access to organized firearms instruction. Unfortunately this catastrophic near miss soured him on the enjoyment that many enjoy with the proper use of firearms.

There are plenty of firearms instructors around who are more than willing to teach the basic fundamentals to anyone who chooses to take the time to get a little education on firearms and their proper handling. Not everyone is like "Paul."
