Two killed in crash of German jet

Monday, March 26, 2001 | 11:05 a.m.

Two German Air Force crew members were killed Friday in a jet crash on the Nevada Test and Training Range during a training mission, Nellis Air Force Base officials said.

The German government would confirm through Nellis officials only that the two men were dead at the scene, 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas and 40 miles southeast of Tonopah. The names and other details about the men were not immediately released.

A Nellis spokesman said today an accident investigation team from Germany was en route to the crash site to examine the wreckage and determine a cause.

The Tornado fighter-bomber crashed shortly before 9 p.m. during Red Flag exercises.
