Postcard from Anaheim, Calif.: Gaughan grabs pole position at alma mater’s game

Hello from Anaheim --

Las Vegas' Brendan Gaughan was in the wrong seat Thursday night. Instead of sitting courtside at the Pond, schmoozing John Thompson, Bill Russell and Jim Brown, he should have been in his NASCAR Craftsman truck.

It might have brought better luck to his beloved Georgetown Hoyas, who lost to Maryland 76-66 in the West Regional semifinals.

Things went much better for the Hoyas last Saturday while Gaughan was driving in the Craftsman Truck race at Bakersfield, Calif. He was in 15th place when his crew chief got on the radio and told him that Georgetown had beaten Hampton to reach the Sweet 16.

"Five laps later, I was in the lead," Gaughan said.

After starting 27th, Gaughan finished third behind winner Ted Musgrave. Georgetown got black-flagged Thursday.

Vroom, vroom, Addy
