Letter: Right time for political reform
Friday, March 23, 2001 | 5:16 a.m.
Campaign finance reform is kind of like the weather -- seems like most of us talk about it, but no one actually does anything.
But things might be different now. At long last, we have a chance to stop talking and start doing. The legislation by Sens. John McCain and Russ Feingold may not be perfect, but it is a bold, bipartisan step in the right direction -- one that will finally start to remove the corrupting influence of special-interest money from our political process.
Fortunately, Sen. John Ensign may be starting to get it. He bucked his party and on Wednesday courageously voted against a harmful amendment to the bill proposed by Sen. Orrin Hatch. He should continue to join Sen. Harry Reid in supporting this important bill.
It's time to pass McCain-Feingold and bring back sunshine to our political process.
