Thursday, March 22, 2001 | 10:41 a.m.

Internet travel continues to grow at rapid pace, with the parent company of Las Vegas-based Travelscape.com holding the No. 3 position in sales and the second largest number of customers in the market.

Nielsen//NetRatings, an Internet audience measurement service, and Harris Interactive, an Internet market research company, reported that online travel sales hit $1.2 billion in January, a 29 percent increase over the $943 million spent by travelers in August.

The January travel sales represented nearly one-third of all online transactions.

The Nielsen-Harris report was based on an online survey of 50,000 Internet users.

The market leader for online travel sales was Travelocity.com, which had 8.7 million customers, followed by Southwest Airlines (4.1 million) and Expedia, parent company of Travelscape.com (4.8 million).

The top five are rounded out by Priceline.com (3.4 million customers) and Delta Air Lines (3 million).

Total sales by each company were not reported.
