Letter: Tell Congress to end marriage tax

Wednesday, March 21, 2001 | 9:19 a.m.

Very soon the U.S. House of Representatives will make important decisions about the marriage penalty tax. This unfair, discriminatory, and immoral tax forces married couples to pay higher taxes than do unmarried couples living together. That encourages immoral behavior and punishes people for being married. It's an outrage! It is the children who suffer from this kind of social engineering.

The House Ways and Means Committee will soon be dealing with the marriage penalty tax. Concerned citizens should send the House two messages: First, the immoral marriage penalty tax should be eliminated, not just "reduced." Second, single-earner families must also be protected. Parents who choose to raise their children themselves must get tax relief, too.
