Rio workers OK union pact

Tuesday, March 20, 2001 | 10:45 a.m.

The Culinary Union said its members ratified a contract at the Rio Suites hotel-casino last week.

The Rio contract, covering 2,500 workers, is patterned on the Culinary contract from the Bellagio, and includes health and pension benefits, guaranteed hours and grievance procedures. Average wages under the contract are: cooks, $13.60 an hour; dishwashers, $11.10; food servers, $8.87; housekeepers, $10.70-$11.20; and bartenders, $13.33.

Meanwhile, layoffs hit the Rio again, as owner Harrah's Entertainment Inc. confirmed the termination of 99 employees, or about 2 percent of its 5,000-employee payroll. The Friday layoffs affected front desk personnel, surveillance technicians, housekeepers, custodians and non-table game casino workers. Gary Thompson, spokesman for Harrah's, said the layoffs were connected to Harrah's continuing efforts to improve the financial performance of the Rio. In August, the Rio laid off 100 restaurant employees and table game workers.
