Las Vegas hosted 2.81 million visitors in January, an increase of just 10,000 over January 2000, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported. That's the lowest monthly increase since August 1998.
The 0.4 percent visitor growth rate did not keep pace with the 3 percent increase in hotel room inventory posted over the last year, and as a result, average occupancy fell 2.3 percentage points to 80.3 percent. Las Vegas had 124,270 rooms available as of Jan. 31, up by 3,632.
McCarran International Airport showed strong growth for the month with 2.87 million passengers, a 7 percent increase. But auto traffic from Southern California fell 2.9 percent.
